Hi to all -
Church of England
This group has appointed Sarah Mullally as the first ever female Archbishop of Canterbury. Wonder how this will be received in this very conservative church?
Japan is on track to elect their first female PM. Women have always been second class citizens in Japan, not leaders of the nation.
China
One of their nuclear submarines 'got caught in a trap intended to snare British and US vessels in the Yellow Sea'. Exactly what that snare was was not described. But the sub was lost. At first, the reports said that 21 crew members, including the captain, died. Later reports raised that count to 55.
It was not too long ago that one of their nuclear subs sank pierside, with some loss of life. It looks like the mighty Chinese Navy, which has been expanding at a very fast rate, may not yet be up to snuff in terms of training and experience.
Shutdown
No movement as of yet. It is noteworthy that while democrats show little concern for the distress this will cause to so many, they do not make any similar sacrifice for themselves. Their pay has not been suspended, their expense accounts continue, and their lavish living does not include any sacrifice. After all, they said, 'we have families to feed.' But, so do the millions of other workers laid off for now, including our military, so what do these democrats care about them? On the other hand, the republican leaders have voluntarily put their pay on hold until this shutdown is over. Some proposed a bill that in the event of any shutdown, all congressional pay and perks be shut down first. Also, the members of congress pay a fine equal to their pay for each day that a shutdown continues.
More Corrections
My spelling, especially of names, is legendary for its errors. Congressman Bo Khanna, as I reported it, is actually Ro Khanna. And Jane Goodall, who just passed at 91, worked with chimps, not gorillas. It was Diana Fosse who was the woman who created the real life 'Gorillas in the Mist'. My apologies.
Gaza
There, in the middle of one of the worst places on earth to live right now, militias have formed to oppose Hamas. There have been firefights and these local, amateur militias are defeating elements of Hamas and taking away areas that Hamas has controlled. The people have had enough. There are reports that these opposition militias were financed and armed by Israel.
Hamas has managed to stall a little longer. Various leaders will meet in Egypt Monday to work out details of the hostage relief and other issues. Hamas continues to demand that they be kept in power at some level. The problem for Hamas is that they have nowhere to go. None of the Arab nations want them to move to their lands. If they surrender, what is to keep their enemies, inside and external, from just killing them. That is a real concern. Hamas does not have a lot of friends anywhere.
Flotilla
Greta's little fleet is done. They never made landfall in Gaza, and delivered no 'aid'. The vessels were small, with lots of protesters seeking publicity, and little room for supplies for the poor suffering people of Gaza. Israel's naval forces intercepted and boarded the flotilla, and took them to Portugal, and told them all to go home. The end of another stunt. Keep in mind that Gaza is not a state, nor independent. It is a part of Israel, and subject to the control and rule of Israel.
The US struck another drug boat off the coast of Venezuela. Killed four and blew up the drug shipment. Insurance rates for those boats must be astronomical.
Montgomery, Alabama
In the 'entertainment district' on Saturday night, there was a shootout resulting in two dead and a dozen more injured, some of them critically. Details are not yet clear, but it appears to be black on black crime.
